Modak (Vegan, Raw & Gluten Free Pyramid Sweet)

Modak (Vegan, Raw & Gluten Free Pyramid Sweet)

“Ganesh” or “Ganpati”, the much loved elephant headed God celebrates his birthday on the 5th of September this year. This festival is celebrated with plenty of food, both savoury and sweet. All kinds of delicious food is made in the lead up to the actual festival and, offered to the food loving God and then, exchanged with friends and family as a sign of goodwill. These sweet dumplings called “Modak” are said to be a favourite of the Lord, are a labour of love made by hand and either, steamed or, fried. Our ongoing (painful!) renovations meant I could not make the traditional steamed or fried versions! These are shaped by hand and consist of date paste and almond flour to make a healthy, refined sugar-free alternative, which vanish rather quickly, whether by divine or man-made means, I haven’t figured out yet!

We need,

  • Date Paste – 1 cup
  • Almond Meal – 1/2 cup
  • Coconut Oil – 1 teaspoon, to grease palms with
  • Green Cardamom Seeds, finely powdered –  2 teaspoons

Directions,

  1. Warm the date paste gently till softened and add almond meal in a mixing bowl.
  2. Stir in the cardamom powder.
  3. Knead gently until the mixture starts to resemble a dough.
  4. Spread some coconut oil on your palms and roll the dough into round balls. Shape into fig like triangular structures (this is a good time to make use of inquisitive little fingers 😍)!
  5. Rest for 30 minutes to set.

Here’s a video with all the steps to make these delicious “Modak“.

Enjoy! 😊
